I think the major difference

I think the major difference is the perceived value of giving up the information. No perceived value giving information to the government, but with Facebook you get social media bling.

This isn't much different from the rewards/affinity marketing programs with credit cards and major stores. For a discounted price or purchase reward credit we give up our buying habits.

My objection isn't that Facebook et al are doing it, I object to the lack of disclosure about what happens to the information.

And your tinfoil hat looks quite dashing. Silver is a good colour for you :-)
