A Blueprint For a Site For Young Readers

Nice post!

Hey Bill- thanks for sharing this. At ZivTech we've built a few youth oriented sites for UNICEF, and it is definitely a challenge to build sites that are serving/aimed at young people.

One thing that I'd definitely be interested in reading about is your experience building effective User Interface for youth aimed sites.

Also- are you going to Szeged? If so would you be interested in helping to out together a BoF session on youth focused site building?

Good UI is youth-friendly UI

Hello, Alex,

RE Szeged (and for those of you following along at home who aren't Drupalistas, Szeged is the venue for the upcoming Drupalcon at the end of August), I'm not able to make it, which really bums me out. With that said, I'd be glad to help with planning on the session, and I'd LOVE to see any ideas generated within the session.

As for what we try and do with sites designed for younger users, we tend to start with the basics: get a clear user story of what different people will be doing, make sure our information architecture supports the various user stories, and then have design that reinforces/highlights the work/play the user will engage in.

We try and avoid some of what I consider design cliches of sites designed for younger users -- eye candy for the sake of being flashy, rollover effects that distract rather than highlight, oversize text in oversize buttons, cutesy graphics, "zany" fonts, etc. We tend to approach designing for younger users with what I consider a respect for their abilities and curiosity.

And then, of course, it always makes sense to vet your mockups (and your beta versions) with people from the age group for whom the site is targeted.

Thanks for covering this subject, Bill! I've added your paragraph about user registration to the COPA/COPPA compliance wiki page in the Legal group at groups.drupal.org.

COPPA

This is a timely post for me. The nonprofit that I work for is currently planning a Drupal site that will need to be COPPA compliant.

I'm curious to see your COPPA code, even if it isn't quite ready to be released as a module yet. Could I convince you to post it somewhere?
